When Room to Read launched our Girls’ Education program in Tanzania last year in a remote area called Turiani, we knew there would be many challenges. Many of the girls in our program travel more than 10 kilometers to and from school each day on foot and early marriage and pregnancy are common in the area.
In order to confront all of these issues head-on and give the girls on our program the best possible chance of success, parent engagement was an integral component from the very beginning. Once our first set of three schools had been selected, our team immediately began to form parent committees at each school. The committees hold monthly meetings, elect their own officers and are jointly responsible with our field staff for monitoring the school attendance of each girl in our program.
